In previous years it has been known as the U.S. Indoor Championships, the Kroger St. Jude Championship, and the Volvo Championships. The tournament was originally held in Salisbury, Maryland, but was moved to Memphis in 1976. Originally an event of the Grand Prix tennis circuit between 1976 and 1989.
